Very good! Wow! That sounds enthusiastic! It’s been a rough year. He owes a substantial debt to a ruthless (but also oddly laid- back) criminal mastermind played by Kevin Spacey, who forces him to use his automotive skills as the getaway driver for a series of daring bank heists.

Not long after squaring this debt, he meets and falls hard for a diner waitress with a heart of gold who offers him love and a chance at a normal life, but he soon finds that a life of crime is not as easy to escape as he’d hope and finds himself stuck in a rapidly- deteriorating series of chaotic events that will challenge what he thought he knew about his criminal colleagues and ultimately force him to get his hands dirty in a way he’d been desperately trying to avoid. That sounds like a Jason Statham movie. Basically, yeah; but with a tone and main character more suited to a Nicholas Sparks YA Romance thing. Also, the conceit of Baby effectively “scoring” every moment of his life with several i. Pods full of eclectic pop music means there’s a song underpinning almost every scene more or less turns it into a kind of action- musical. This sounds insufferable.

What’s so good about it?? Well, it’s directed by Edgar Wright, so! Now I want to see it! You should probably have led with that. Yeah, Edgar Wright basically specializes in movies that should be completely insufferable but actually turn out kind of great (see: Pilgrim, Scott), and this is right in that wheelhouse. It’s a very fast- paced, involving, compelling little movie that doesn’t overreach – despite all the weight and excitement that gets attached to every Edgar Wright project by the critical set; it really is “just” a mid- scale action movie with a more whimsical romantic subplot and a slick soundtrack. And that’s just fine. Is Baby an interesting hero?

He is. I didn’t expect anything special out of Elgort based on his previous movies, but he brings it here in a really challenging and different kind of role. There’s something.

But it’s an unusual energy that makes him at once compelling, off- putting, weirdly intimidating but also weirdly child- like; and once the plot has been laid out the film is mostly driven by the way the other ostensibly older, jaded “grown- up” characters and compelled to act toward him. Some friendly, some bullying, some nurturing, some hurtful, some bouncing back and forth between all of the above. It’s as though his actual personality is so guarded and inscrutable that the other characters are driven to project one onto him. And that’s an interesting “real- feeling” dynamic that ultimately pays off with a freewheeling third act where surprise character turns as to which of the “bad guys” are or are not actually “bad” plays out in clever, interesting ways.
